If you plan to come to Germany for an Ausbildung (vocational training), one of the most common questions is: "Which German level do I actually need?" The answer depends on the route you apply through.
Which level is usually asked for
In most cases an Ausbildung visa needs at least an A2 German certificate (Sprachzertifikat). Many employers and consulates in practice prefer B1, because once training starts you work in German both in the classroom and at the workplace.
- A2: can be accepted as the minimum for some training positions and for the first application.
- B1: the level most commonly asked for — realistic for the Berufsschule (vocational school) and for talking with colleagues.
Why skills matter more than the certificate
A certificate helps you get the visa, but in your first weeks in Germany you must understand workplace instructions, safety rules and everyday conversation with colleagues. People who hold a certificate but have had little speaking practice struggle the most in the first months.
How much time to plan
Going from zero to B1 usually takes 6–9 months of consistent study. Start learning long before the visa process begins — preparing at the last minute risks delays.
- A1 to A2: about 2–3 months of consistent practice.
- A2 to B1: another 3–4 months, with extra focus on speaking and listening.
- Plan an extra 4–6 weeks for booking the certificate exam and waiting for the result.
